I feel greatly privileged that I was asked to tell the extraordinary story of how Mike Msizi, an activist whose time in exile was spent in Denmark, returned to South Africa and saw an opportunity to create a wind farm on the land of his ancestors.
Because of my links with Denmark (having been an exchange student there in the 1970s) I met the Danish Ambassador to South Africa, René Dinesen. Mike had first approached the Danes to help him get the project started.
A Town in the Suburbs tells the story of this very rapid urbanisation and explains why Observatory to this day retains the eclectic mix of residential homes, commercial and industrial properties – along with a very large number of churches.

The publication of my University of Cape Town History Honours’ thesis inspired me to take up writing full-time. The book is out of print and a reprint is planned.

The “school on the Hill” was named for Governor Sir George Grey but he had very little to do with its founding. The Spirit of the Tower outlines his role in signing approvals, but it was John Paterson, also the founder of the EP Herald and Standard Bank, who was in fact the leading light in establishing what was first known as the Grey Institute on a plot overlooking the city in what is now Central.

I collected a number of articles and interviews for this brochure, which became an important part of the club’s celebrations. I wrote the anchor article on the club’s history with the help of several club members and based on interviews with early members. I also interviewed Desmond Haynes and secured articles from Bob Woolmer and Peter Roebuck.
